What is the difference between BS1139 and EN39?

1. Different Origins

BS1139 is an older British standard developed by the British Standards Institution. It is widely used in the UK and its former colonies or areas of influence, such as the Middle East, India, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
EN39 is a unified European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization, mainly used in European countries. Its technical requirements are more modern and stringent.

2. Similar Dimensions, Different Tolerances

Both standards specify a scaffolding pipe outer diameter of 48.3mm, with common wall thicknesses of 3.2mm or 4.0mm. However:
EN39 has stricter control over tolerances, including straightness, roundness, welding, and wall thickness.
BS1139 also has clear requirements, but the overall control is more lenient, making it easier to meet for many developing countries.

3. Different Material and Production Requirements

BS1139 typically uses standard ERW carbon steel with a minimum yield strength of 235MPa.
EN39 also requires carbon steel but places greater emphasis on material consistency and stricter standards for weld strength and absence of cracks.

4. Different Surface Treatment Requirements

BS1139 allows for various surface treatments such as galvanizing, painting, or oil coating.
EN39 emphasizes hot-dip galvanizing and must comply with EU regulations on zinc layer thickness, uniformity, and adhesion-usually in accordance with EN ISO 1461.

5. Different Applications and Usage Habits

BS1139 is more commonly used in traditional tube-and-coupler scaffolding systems. It is suitable for projects in regions like the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa where structural requirements may be less complex.
EN39 is more frequently used in modern European scaffolding systems such as Ringlock or Cuplock, widely adopted in large-scale projects with higher safety requirements.

6. Different Certification and Testing

EN39 products usually need to pass third-party inspections (such as TÜV or SGS) before being used in Europe.
BS1139 products can also undergo third-party testing, but many countries accept them with more flexibility. Buyers in the Middle East often specifically request BS1139.
